Infrastructure planning

All vehicles and equipment need refueling infrastructure to keep running. Zero-emission models just have different needs than their diesel counterparts. This page focuses on supporting EV charging planning and needs, since battery electric vehicles are the majority of zero-emission market share. If your fleet is interested in exploring hydrogen refueling, reach out directly to our technical assistance team for specialized support!

Purchasers are encouraged to layer WAZIP infrastructure vouchers with incentive programs from their local utilities. WAZIP technical assistance providers can support Purchasers as they work with their utility on infrastructure installation.

Charging infrastructure should be planned early

Zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) rely on charging infrastructure to operate. Early planning helps ensure chargers are ready when vehicles arrive and prevents delays that can leave vehicles unable to operate until charging is available. Infrastructure planning does not look the same for every fleet. Fleet size, site location, power availability and timing all matter.

Infrastructure planning in three steps

1. Connect early with utilities and third parties

Utilities, installers and technical assistance partners help assess available power, required upgrades and installation timelines.

2. Confirm where and how vehicles and equipment will charge

Power availability, space, site access and site readiness affect which charging types are possible. Shared locations, rented facilities and parking constraints may limit options.

3. Plan before you order vehicles

Infrastructure — fueling equipment and power — often takes longer to plan and install than vehicle delivery.

Get infrastructure funding help from WAZIP

WAZIP offers modest infrastructure funding for voucher recipients. When you apply for a WAZIP voucher, make sure to know the manufacturer and model number of the infrastructure you plan on buying. WAZIP’s infrastructure incentive is provided per vehicle. Infrastructure incentives must be requested when the vehicle voucher is requested, and they will be reimbursed following vehicle delivery.

Eligible models for charging equipment are those listed on the electric power research institute vetted products list. For hydrogen fueling infrastructure information, contact info@wazip.org or technicalassistance@wazip.org .

Read the WAZIP Implementation Manual (IM) (PDF 1.7 MB) to learn more about how to apply for infrastructure funding when you apply for a WAZIP voucher.
